GE AC6000CW. alternator
The AC6000CW locomotive was designed at General Electric Transportation Systems in Erie, Pennsylvania, in late 1993 or early 1994, and first delivered on December 31, 1998. Its overall length is 76 feet, with a fuel capacity of 5,500 US gallons.
Unlike competing designs which feature only a single inverter per truck, the AC6000 has one inverter for each traction motor. There is one traction motor per axle. The AC6000 delivers the highest traction-rating ever offered in a single-engine locomotive. The 16-cylinder model HDL 4-stroke GE diesel engine provides 6,000 hp. It was designed in close collaboration with Deutz-MWM of Germany, a major European manufacturer of locomotive and marine propulsion systems.
Companies owning GE AC6000CWs, as of 2006, include: CSX Transportation with 117 (they classify these locomotives as CW60ACs), and BHP Billiton, a mining concern in Australia with eight. The Union Pacific Railroad has 186; however, some of these were delivered as “convertibles”, with 4400 horsepower 7FDL diesel engines; these are classified as C44/60CW’s and are capable of being retrofitted with the 6000 hp HDL engine. This has not yet taken place.
The HDL powerplant subsequently evolved into the highly successful “GEVO” engine, in V12 form, and now (August ‘07) powers over 900 production Evolution series (ES44AC or ES44DC) locomotives on many North American railroads.

- EMD SD90MAC A similarly powerful locomotive built by EMD which entered production prior to the AC6000CW, but which was a failure in the marketplace. The 265H powerplant used in these locomotives was mechanically unreliable and EMD chose not to upgrade it to meet current EPA emissions standards. It has not been developed further and can no longer be sold in the United States. Current EMD models, such as the SD70ACe and SD70M-2, are powered by the same 710 series two-stroke V16 used since the introduction of the 60-series in the mid-1980’s.
