Carbon planet. carbon brushes

A carbon planet, also referred to as a diamond planet or carbide planet, is a theoretical type of planet proposed by Marc Kuchner that could form if protoplanetary discs are carbon-rich and oxygen-poor. According to planetary science, it would develop differently from Earth, Mars and Venus, planets made up mostly of silicon-oxygen compounds.

Such a planet would probably have an iron-rich core like the known terrestrial planets. Surrounding that would be silicon carbide and titanium carbide. Above that, a layer of carbon in the form of graphite, possibly with a kilometers-thick substratum of diamond if there is sufficient pressure. The surface would contain hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Extraterrestrial life might be possible if water is present, but the highly reducing environment could result in metabolism taking the opposite approach to that of terrestrial life, with oxygen-bearing compounds being eaten as food to react with the carbon-based atmosphere.

The pulsar [[PSR 1257+12]] may possess carbon planets that formed from the disruption of a carbon-producing star. Carbon planets might also be located near the galactic core, where stars have more carbon.

Carbon planets are predicted to be of similar diameter to silicate and water planets of the same mass, potentially making them difficult to distinguish.

Shaft mining. shaft. Most importantly in

Shaft mining or Shaft sinking refers to the method of excavating a vertical or near-vertical tunnel from the top down, where there is initially no access to the bottom.
When the top of the excavation is surface it is referred to as a shaft, when the top of the excavation is underground it is called a winze.

Off-shaft Access

The mine shaft is used to access to an underground mining facility. Horizontal workings off the shaft are called drifts, galleries or levels, these extend from the central shaft towards the ore body. The point of contact between these levels and the shaft itself is known as the inset, or shaft station.

Surface facilities

On the surface above the shaft stands a building known as the headframe (or poppet head or pit head). Depending on the type of hoist used the top of the headframe will either house a hoist motor or a sheave wheel (with the hoist motor mounted on the ground).
The headframe will also contain bins for storing ore being transferred to the processing facility. If the shaft is used for mine ventilaton a plenum or casing, is incorporated into the headframe to ensure the proper flow of air into and out of the mine.

Shaft lining

In North and South America, smaller shafts are designed to be rectangular with titmber supports. Larger shafts are round and are concrete lined.

Shaft compartments

A mine shaft is split into multiple compartments. The largest compartment is used for the cage, a conveyance used for moving workers and supplies below the surface. It functions in a similar manner to an elevator. The second compartment is the skip, used to transport ore to the surface. Smaller mining operations use a skip mounted underneath the cage, rather than a separate device. The third compartment is used for an emergency exit; it may house an auxiliary cage or a system of ladders. An additional compartment houses mine services such as high voltage cables and pipes for transfer of water, compressed air or diesel fuel.

Muggles (recording). These brushes

Muggles is the title of a recording by Louis Armstrong and His Orchestra, recorded in Chicago on December 7, 1928. The title refers to Muggles as a slang term for marijuana; Armstrong was an enthusiastic user of muggles, which was legal in most U. S. states at the time.

The personnel of this recording were, in addition to Armstrong on trumpet, Fred Robinson, trombone; Jimmy Strong, clarinet; Earl Hines, piano; Mancy Carr (not “Cara” as his name has been too often misspelled) on banjo, and Zutty Singleton on drums. “Muggles” is in the 12 bar blues form. It starts out with some rather modernistic piano work for the times with Singleton playing sensitively on the brushes. Robinson then takes a gutsy lead without breaking the mood, followed by a chorus by Strong showing the influence of Jimmie Noone. The rest of the band then stops for 2 measures while Armstrong starts a chorus on an adventuresome break subtly playing with the rhythm. The horns then play chords behind Armstrong’s excellent 2 choruses of solo. The rhythm gently suggests doubletime on the first chorus, giving a sense of acceleration without actually speeding up the tempo, then returns to the dreamy feel of the tune’s beginning for the final chorus, with Hines creating fills behind Armstrong.

This was the only side issued from the recording session that day. It is one of the last 4 sides Armstrong made before moving to New York City where, while Armstrong remained magnificent, the bands backing him up were often less interesting, and he switched from recording original compositions to covering popular songs. “Muggles” is regarded as one of Armstrong’s masterpieces. It was originally issued on Okeh 8703, a “78″ disc in Okeh’s “race record” series. The recording has been reissued numerous times since, and is available on several different compact discs today. The tune has been covered by later jazz musicians, including Nicholas Payton.

Slip It In. or brass ’slip

Slip It In is a Black Flag album released in 1984.

“Slip It In” is an extension of the sound Black Flag utilised on its predecessor “My War”, that is: heavy, intense, dense and progressive. It also featured Rollins’ further development as a songwriter, contributing to four out of eight tracks on the album and the debut of bassist Kira Roessler.

Unlike “My War”, with a first half offered some consolation to fans of the conventional punk rock of “Damaged”, “Slip It In” aggressively pursued the new sound that Black Flag would develop until their demise. Critics said that their new sound was more heavy metal than the punk rock the band had been famous for.

“Slip It In” also demonstrates Black Flag’s increasing use of instrumentals with the menacing “Obliteration” where Greg Ginn demonstrates his new, more complex playing style. Fan favorites include “Black Coffee” and “Wound Up”.

The title track features a then fifteen year old Suzi Gardner, who would later become a founding member of L7, doing vocals and moaning.

Track listing

  1. “Slip It In” – 6:17 (Ginn)
  2. “Black Coffee” – 4:53 (Ginn)

  5. “Obliteration” – 5:51 (Ginn)
  6. “The Bars” – 4:20 (Dukowski/Rollins)
  7. “My Ghetto” – 2:02 (Ginn/Rollins)

Drum stick. brushes are slowly abraded

This article is about the musical tool. For more meanings, see Drumstick (disambiguation).

A drum stick or drumstick is an object used to strike drums and other percussion instruments to produce sound. Some specialized drum sticks are called beaters, mallets, or brushes.

Snare drum sticks

Snare drum sticks are usually made of wood, often hickory, oak or hard maple. Other used materials include aluminum (covered with a PVC sleeve to avoid damage to cymbals), fiberglass, nylon, acrylic, plastic, and carbon fibre. A typical drum stick is around 1.5cm in diameter and 41cm long, although drummers have a wide range of shapes and sizes to choose from. Many drummers are very particular about the exact shape, size, weight, balance, density, and grain of their sticks. All of these qualities attribute to the “feel” and sound of the stick.

Snare drum sticks may be designed for use in particular performance contexts. Sticks that are smaller in diameter or balanced farther towards the tip may be intended for orchestral playing that requires fine control and soft dynamics. Sticks for street playing (e.g. drum corps and marching bands) are almost always thick and weighty, to promote extended production of sound at extreme dynamics. There are different sizes of drum sticks for each situation, designated by a letter and number, e.g. 2b and 5b are thicker, while 5a and 7a are smaller.

Anatomy of a snare drum stick

The drum head is (usually) struck with the tip of the drum stick. Tips come in many shapes, such as acorn, barrel, oval and round. The tip is sometimes referred to as the bead. Traditionally, the tip is made of the same piece of wood as the rest of the stick, although there are drum sticks with a plastic nylon tip conceived by Joe Calato in Niagara Falls, NY in 1958 and the newer acetal tip, conceived by Ken Drinan and Paul Kiersted in the 1970s. The acetal tip produces a brighter sound when playing cymbals and is less likely to splinter after sustained or violent use. However, it is prone to cracking or flying off.

Immediately below the tip is shoulder of the stick, which tapers out. The rest of the stick is referred to as the shaft, with the butt at the opposite end to the tip. This section of the stick is prone to breaking after or during cymbal use or during rim shots.

Players use two sticks, employing either a matched grip, popularised by Ringo Starr in the 1960s or a traditional grip, popularised by Sanford A. Moeller from talks with American Civil War drummers/veterans. With either grip, players keep the balance point of the stick slightly beyond their hands.

Mallets

A mallet comprises a head connected to a thin shaft. Unwrapped mallets, used on glockenspiel, xylophone and other instruments with keys made of durable material, have heads made of brass, kelon, nylon, acrylic, wood, or other hard materials; wrapped mallets, used on marimba, vibraphone and other instruments with softer keys, have heads of kelon, nylon, acrylic or other medium-hard materials wrapped in softer materials like yarn, cord or latex. Mallet shafts are commonly made of rattan or birch.

Different mallets are used primarily to alter the timbre of the mallet instrument being played. Typically, softer or thicker mallets are used on an instrument’s lower registers and harder, thinner mallets used on higher registers. Mallet choice is typically left up to the performer, though some compositions specify if a certain sound is desired by the composer.

Players frequently employ two mallets in a matched grip or four mallets in a four-mallet grip; however, use of up to six mallets is not uncommon. More than two mallets may be used even when no chords are called for by the composer so that the performer has a wider range of timbres from which to select or to facilitate performance of music that moves rapidly between high and low, and if hit properly can switch between the two pitches.

Brushes

Brushes are a set of bristles connected to a handle so that the bristles make a rounded fan shape. The bristles can be made of metal or plastic; handles are commonly made of wood or aluminum, and are often coated with rubber. Some brushes are telescoping, so that the bristles can be pulled inside a hollow handle and the fan made by the bristles can be of variable length, width and density. Retracting the bristles also protects the brush when it is not being used. The non-bristled end of the brush may end in a loop or a ball. Though most performers prefer using metallic brushes, more now use plastic brushes because of their increased durability.

Brushes add texture and sound not possible with sticks. For instance, silky swish sounds on coated heads and the delicate “ting” sound on cymbals are only possible with thin wire or nylon brushes.

Normally open. the current.

In electronics, a normally open switch is one that normally prevents current flow and which allows current to flow when it is perturbed. Such a switch requires a constant intervention in order to keep it closed. A non-electronic example of this would be the safety on a lawnmower, which will prevent gas flow to the engine when it is let go.

Brush (electric). developed again. These brushes

In electrical engineering, brushes conduct current between stationary wires and moving parts, most commonly in a rotating shaft. Most importantly, in an electric motor, an alternator or electric generator, the coils of the rotor have to be connected. To accomplish this, two metal (copper or brass) ’slip rings’ are affixed on the shaft and springs press braided copper wire ‘brushes’ onto the rings which conduct the current. Later, these copper wire brushes were replaced with carbon blocks — but these blocks are still called brushes. As the brushes are slowly abraded, they may have to be replaced, if this is possible.

If the copper rings are split into parts with “interlaced” connections, the arrangement is called a commutator.

Metal fiber brushes are currently being developed again. These brushes may have advantages over current carbon brushes, but have not yet seen wide implementation.

Siberian Weasel. called brushes. As

The Siberian Mountain Weasel, also known as the Siberian Weasel, Kolinsky or Himalayan Weasel, is a rust coloured member of the weasel family. Its scientific name is Mustela sibirica.

Siberian weasel fur makes the finest water color or oil paint brushes and is especially sought after by artists. The so-called kolinsky sable-hair brush is produced using the winter fur of the male siberian weasel, not sable.

Needle wire gauge. copper wire ‘brushes’ onto

Needle wire gauge is derived from the Birmingham Wire Gauge. #1 = 18½ B.W.G.; #2 = 19 B.W.G., and so on to #14 = 31 B.W.G. See S. S. Wheeler, Electrical World 12 November 1887

On September 20, 1994, Rowland Carson posted a list of the 39 most used gauge systems in use worldwide:

Of these Birmingham still features with the following:

  • Birmingham Gauge BG ~ iron hoop & strip, steel sheet
  • Birmingham Wire Gauge BWG ~ iron & steel telephone wire
  • Birmingham Wire Gauge for Silver & Gold ~ silver & gold
  • Stubs Iron Wire Gauge ~ iron wire
  • Stubs Steel Wire Gauge ~ steel drill rod

Methylation specific oligonucleotide microarray. being developed

Methylation

specific oligonucleotide microarray was developed as a technique to map methylation changes in DNA in cancer. This technique was developed by Professor Tim Hui-Ming Huang and was published in journal Genome Research on 2002 (Gitan et al, 2002). The method utilizes bisulfite-modified DNA that is used as templates for PCR amplification, which is subsequently hybridized to oligonucleotide microarray.

Bosch reaction. carbon brushes but have

The Bosch reaction is a chemical reaction between carbon dioxide and hydrogen that produces elemental carbon (graphite), water and heat.

The overall reaction is as follows:

CO2(g) + 2 H2(g) → C(s) + 2 H2O(l)

The above reaction is actually the result of two reactions. The first reaction, the water gas shift reaction, is a fast one.

CO2 + H2 → CO + H2O

The second reaction controls the reaction rate.

CO + H2 → C + H2O

The overall reaction produces <math>2.3 x 10^3</math> joules for every gram of carbon produced at 650 °C. Reaction temperatures are in the range of 450 to 600 °C.

The reaction can be accelerated in the presence of an iron, cobalt or nickel catalyst. Ruthenium also serves to speed up the reaction. The production of elemental carbon tends to foul the catalyst’s surface, which is detrimental to the reaction’s efficiency.

Together with the Sabatier reaction the Bosch reaction is studied as a way to remove carbon dioxide and to generate clean water aboard a space station [1]
